Founded in 1849, Yalumba has been owned through several generations by the Hill-Smith family, making it Australia’s most historic family-owned wine company. 170 years later, Yalumba is committed to making terroir-driven wines of character and individuality, while seeking to continually reduce the environmental impact of winemaking. They have developed their own sustainable viticulture programs since the mid 1990s, and match every hectare of vineyard land with a hectare of native vegetation. Wines are made with the least intervention possible, and wild yeasts have been used for fermentation for over 20 years. In addition, all Yalumba wines are 100% vegan since the 2012 vintage. ‘Samuel’s Collection’ was named in honor of Yalumba’s founder Samuel Smith. 100% viognier, after harvest 60% of the fruit was pressed to old French oak barriques, with the remainder going into stainless steel tanks. Native yeast sparked fermentation, and the wine was left on the lees, with bâtonnage for 10 months, lending a weight, creaminess, and complexity to the palate. An expressive nose of juicy apricots, fresh ginger, saffron, and white flowers yields to a full, luscious palate of deep stone fruit flavors. Opulent in texture, it offers up rich notes of apricots, spice, and honey on a lingering finish. Sustainably grown, low intervention, vegan.
