Fifth-generation Oregonian Joe Swick took a dive into winemaking in 2003 when he worked as a cellar hand for Owen Roe in Washington's Yakima Valley. In the 15 years since then, Swick has traveled the world, working vintages all over Europe and the South Pacific. Finally landing back in Oregon, he started his own label, which emphasizes a commitment to producing wine from organically or sustainably grown grapes wines with minimal intervention. This 100% marsanne sourced from the Washington side of the Columbia Valley is a stunning example. The grapes are hand harvested and pressed as whole bunches. The wine ferments in barrel with native yeasts for about one month, then ages in those same 500-liter barrels for 6 months, with one racking before bottling and no battonage (barrel stirring). The wine is unfiltered and lightly sulfured before bottling, creating a wonderfully tropical mango, citrusy expression with a light touch of volatile acidity and funk. Organically grown, low-intervention, vegan.
