Traditional Tuscan wines have been made at Rocca di Castagnoli for centuries, dating back to 900 AD. Owned by the Ricasoli family since the Renaissance, in 1981 the winery was bought by Calogero Cali, who initiated a sort of renaissance of the winery itself, hiring star viticulturist Rolando Bernacchini in 2003, and converting to organic viticulture in 2012 (achieving full certification in 2017). This Chianti Classico Riserva is 95% sangiovese, 5% canaiolo, from a single vineyard on a hillside surrounding an old friary (hence the name, “Poggio a’Frati”). It’s aged for 6 months in stainless steel, 15 months large oval barrels & tonneaux, followed by 12 months in bottle. “Poggio a’Frati” displays tons of elegance, structure, and complexity. Bright red in color, it opens the show with opulent aromas of red berries and spices. Layers of ripe Marasca cherries, bright red currants, baking spices, and balsamic on the palate are exquisitely mellowed by bottle aging, resulting in an elegant classic that will elevate any meal. Certified organic.
