Raúl Pérez takes nature very seriously, and he certainly imparts that philosophy onto his winemaking, making minimal intervention his utmost priority. He made his first vintage at age 22 in 1994 at his family’s winery, Castro Ventosa, which was established in Bierzo by his family in 1752. He still consults for his family’s winery, but has also taken on his own various projects. This bottling is from his personal label, which has quickly become the point of reference for the Bierzo appellation. Raúl is universally considered to be one of the world’s most visionary winemakers, even earning himself the nickname “Wine Wizard” (he does indeed have a big, burly, grey beard as well). The “Atalier” is a project developed by Raúl and his friend and colleague Rodrigo Méndez (“a cruz das animas” means “the cross of souls”). It is 100% albariño that comes from the Val do Salnés in Rías Baixas. It has notes of unripe apples, grapefruit skin, eucalyptus, and peach. It is fruit forward on the entry, but has a refreshing acidity on the finish to keep the wine dry, balanced and fresh. Organically grown, low-intervention, vegan.
