Domaine Pedres Blanques, which translates to “white rocks” in Catalan, is owned and operated by Rié and Hiro Shoji. They are both Japanese, but met at the wine school in Beaune, and five or so years after graduation, they purchased land in Collioure, which is in the Côtes Catalanes in southwestern France. Their mere 3.5ha are in the most remote part of the appellation at high elevations, with an often violent and rugged climate with incredibly steep vineyards. The land is so arid and winds are so fierce that there is never any frost and virtually no threat of disease. The grenache grapes are grown organically and fermented 100% whole-cluster with indigenous yeasts, no sulfur added, and are bottled unfined and unfiltered. This wine is truly complex and stunning, with a fruity nose that shows hints of flowers and clove. As it opens and develops, more umami comes forward, reminiscent of olive tapenade on top of the silky blue and black fruit and streaks of minerality. Organically grown, low-intervention, vegan.
