Luís Pato has spent his career at the forefront or vanguard of Portuguese winemaking, and his family has been producing wine at Quina do Ribeirinho since the 18th century. In 1999, by personal choice, he decided to leave the DOC denomination and label his wines as Regional Beiras so he could have more freedom in his winemaking. He explains “Laranja de Madalena” as such: “Another expression of our nonconformist philosophy; making a macerated white wine from our beloved red grape Baga, to commemorate my granddaughter's Madalena birth. A wine that my granddaughter could drink in 2034, when she will be able to drink, and remember her grandfather! White wine made from Baga then aged 2 weeks in wooden vats with maceration of Maria Gomes skins followed by 12 months in old 600l French oak barrels. No fining.” In one bottle we have a powerful, ageable wine with firm tannin and acidity like a well-structured Piedmont Red. But at the same time, there is incredible lightness in weight and a beautiful perfume, reminiscent of stone fruit preserve, dried apricot and savory herbs. Organically grown, vegan.
