Attention Southern Rhône Red lovers: Please introduce yourself to Lavia, which hails from the Murcia region of southeast Spain (between Andalusia and Valencia). The Bullas growing zone is located in the inland, mountainous region of Murcia, where it is slightly cooler and nighttime temperatures can dip down to around 60F (from daytime highs of 100F+!). Only olives, almonds and warm-climate vines like monastrell (aka mourvedre) and syrah typically grow well here. This is certainly more Sahara than Mediterranean. In such extreme conditions, one would expect the wine to be big and brash, however French winemaker Sebastien Boudon coaxes incredible complexity and finesse from their grapes. A meaty, mouth-filling wine, Lavia+ offers up notes of leather, toasted coconut, stewed plum, and mincemeat, with an earthy, spicy finish. Great for lovers of old school Rioja or for firing up the backyard BBQ.
