Founded in 1890 by five families, Sociedad Vinícola de La Rioja Alta produces a number of excellent cuvées, first and foremost is Viña Ardanza (this winery merged with La Rioja Alta in 1904). Few dispute that they are the leading quality oriented winery in Rioja, and they impressively have more than 50,000 casks and 6.4 million bottles stored at one time, making them able to supply large quantities of fully mature wines of world class quality. After vinification in the new ultra modern vinification plant near Haro, aging is in traditional Bordeaux casks, all made from American oak. Racking is by hand every 6 months with 8 teams working full time racking the 51,000 casks. There is no filtration prior to bottling and further long aging in bottle before release. This bottling is 80% tempranillo and 20% garnacha, aged separately and for different times in American oak before being blended together and bottled in May 2015. 2010 was a legendary vintage, being one of only FOUR vintages in the last 77 years to be labeled as Selección Especial (previously Reserva Especial). The wine is clean, pure, expressive, and aromatic, with classic Rioja aromas of long aging in barrel and slow oxidation through years in wood. The palate shows powerful energy with fine, mostly resolved tannins and excellent harmony and persistence. Beneath the bold fruit lie notes of curry, diesel, old furniture, and forest floor. Organically grown, vegan.
