The Il Poggio estate was purchased in 1919 as a family hunting preserve, and was eventually passed to Franca Ordone, who had a history of working in the furniture business in Milan. She decided she wanted to use the land for wine production, and with the help of oeonologist Gaspare Buscemi, the land was cleared for vines and production began in 1976. Franca’s daughter, Francesca, took over in 2003, catching the “family winemaking bug” after some time working in real estate. The wines produced are sustainably farmed and an homage to the land they come from; the hills of Rovereto in the Gavi DOGC are rich in sandy clay soils that impart amazing terroir and character to the ancient Cortese grape. From their 3 hectares, they produce small quantities of high quality Gavi wines that are fermented with indigenous yeast. The wine is super crisp and light, citrus dominated, very mineral driven, and reminiscent of the summertime. Sustainably grown, low-intervention, vegan.
