Azienda Agricola Il Farneto was founded in the 90s by Marco Bertoni to support sustainable agriculture initiatives, producing grapes while respecting the environment and making natural wines that reflect terroir. They have 34 hectares (only 8-ha are vineyard, the rest is planted to other food crops) located between the hills of Scandiano and Canossa in Emilia-Romagna. Situated at a higher elevation, the land itself presents a wide variety of biodiversity thanks to the favorable microclimate. The wine is named after the Rio Rocca, a river cherished by locals. At the winery, fermentation occurs with natural yeast and sulfur use is minimal to non-existent. Spergola is a grape that is indigenous to the Emilia-Romagna, and creates wines with bracing acidity. Typically, when made into still wines, the grapes are partially dried to create intense and elegant aromas with a rounder body. In addition to those techniques, this wine also sees some skin contact to further increase heady floral and spice aromatics. The nose is full of wildflowers, honey, and spice with a very dry palate with some tannin structure, making it complex yet refreshing. Certified organic, low-intervention, vegan.
