Fossil & Fawn is the project of Jim Fischer Jr. and Jenny Mosbacher. Its roots are (literally) in Jim’s family vineyard, Silvershot (formerly Crowley Station) in the Eola-Amity Hills AVA. The Fischer family has lived at the Silvershot property since the 70s, but began planting their home vineyard in 1999. They hand planted 15 acres of own-rooted vine cuttings sourced from neighboring heritage vineyards. Silvershot is dry farmed and sustainably managed. The soils are of marine sediment, Ogliocene sandstone, and the fossilized seashells that sometimes make an appearance on the labels. Jim Sr. handles the viticulture end of the operation, while winemaking duties are shared by Jenny and Jim Jr. in space sublet from Scenic Valley Farms in the small town of Gervais, OR. Beginning with the 2011 vintage, Jenny and Jim Jr. have produced small batches of unique wines, keeping it clean and simple in the cellar, with native yeast fermentation, all neutral oak, and no additions, manipulations, fining, or filtering. This intriguing blend of gewürtztraminer, riesling, gruner veltliner, auxerrois, and semillon perches deftly on the wire that spans “slightly esoteric white wine” and “super accessible orange wine”! Notes of apricot, musky peach skin, orange water, and Middle Eastern spice market converge in a medium-weight sipper with enough acidity to keep things fresh, and a slightly briny, savory finish. A kiss of white pepper and just a suggestion of tannin make this a wonderful companion to food. Subtle and complex, don’t drink this too cold! Perfect as an ideal “gateway” orange wine, or for white wine lovers looking to jazz things up a bit! Organically grown, low-intervention, vegan.
