Foppiano Vineyards is one of the oldest continuously operated, family-owned wineries in Sonoma County. Founded in 1896 (hence the name of the wine, Lot 96) by Giovanni Foppiano, the estate survived Prohibition by selling home winemaking kits. For the past several decades the winery was under the leadership of the widely respected Lou Foppiano, one of the pioneers and cornerstones of the Russian River Valley AVA. Sadly, Lou passed in March of 2012, but the fifth generation of Foppianos are still running the winery, with winemaker Nova Perrill helping them stick to their mission. It was under Lou's watch that the winery became known for their petite sirah, taking it from a simple blending grape to a stand-alone grape variety, treating it very similarly to pinot noir. This red is a blend of 85% petite sirah, 10% zinfandel, and 5% carignane, but the petite sirah really shines; lush and soft with ripe fruit and some peppery spice. The zinfandel contributes luscious fruit while the carignane adds structure, creating a harmonious balance and super friendly wine.
