Sylvain Pataille was a highly regarded consulting enologist before taking on his own project in 1999, Domaine Sylvain Pataille, which covers 15-hectares, all in Marsannay in the Côte de Nuits. He produces 12 cuvées from several different grapes. This 100% pinot noir comes from a blend of multiple terroirs across the Marsannay village appellation from vines planted between 1950-1980 that are all certified organic converting to biodynamic practices. The wine is fermented 30% whole cluster with only natural yeast and aged in neutral French oak for 18 months. It exhibits classic pinot noir cherry character, fresh and dried, with a definite earthiness reminiscent of potting soil, mushrooms, and forest floor. It is elegantly balanced, with smooth tannin on a medium-bodied frame. Certified organic.
