Widely agreed to be among the top domaines in Alsace, Domaine Marcel Deiss is located in Bergheim, a small village in the heart of the Alsace wine region. Current winemaker Jean-Michel Deiss took over in the early 80's and have since converted the vineyards to biodynamic farming. Today the domaine consists of 27 hectares of hillside vineyards spread over 9 communes and approximately 20 kilometers. The Schoffweg "Le Chemin des Brebis" (path of the sheep) is a true expression of Alsatian terroir, with six varieties of grapes grown (organically or biodynamically) and harvested together (riesling, pinot blanc, pinot gris, pinot noir, muscat and chasselas), then pressed and native yeast-fermented and aged in used Burgundian barrels. A beautiful clear pale yellow in the glass, offering an inviting nose of white flowers and minerals that gives way to flavors of ripe apple, honey, flowers and beeswax. Dry, rich and complex, notably structured and minerally, this drinks so well now but can still age another decade! Biodynamically grown, vegan.
