Domaine du Gour de Chaulé was founded in 1900 by Eugene Bonfils, the great-grandfather of current proprietor, Stéphanie Fumoso, and is situated in the heart of the village of Gigondas. In 1970, Rolande, Stéphanie’s grandmother, successfully implemented the commercialization of wine bottled at their estate. Her daughter, Aline, developed and modernized the estate in 1985 and converted to Lutte Raisonnée, or sustainable agriculture with minimal intervention. These three generations of women winemakers have worked tirelessly to create the best wines possible in the most environmentally friendly manner. A majority of their estate is planted to grenache, with a few plots of syrah and mourvedre for blending and a small plot of cinsault for rosé. Their fruit is harvested by hand and vinified in whole bunches, and then the wine is aged in used oak vats (this domaine never uses new oak.) Gigondas is located directly under the rugged peaks of the Dentelles de Montmirail, which lends a rustic, rocky edge to the wines in the area. Known for muscular, robust wines, the region produces top quality reds rivaling those of its neighbor, Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Decidedly old-school in style, Gigondas wines eschew being high-tech, smooth, or easy-drinking, in favor of a spicy, leathery character that’s able to age for 10-15 years (although they’re just as delicious now.) The ‘Cuvee Tradition’ is made with 80% grenache, 10% syrah, and 10% mourvedre and aged for approximately 18 months in large neutral oak foudres. Bright ruby in color, this wine is beautifully aromatic with scents of black raspberry, stone fruits, and notes of crushed white pepper and five spice. Sturdy on the palate with intense red and dark berry fruit flavors accented with spice that get heftier with air. A bright mineral element lends definition and keeps it from being overbearing, and the long finish displays a floral character and sweet, dusty tannins.
