Frank Cornelissen is the proprietor behind the wine, and it is also the name of his azienda agricola (farm winery) in Sicily. His philosophy is to respect the earth and listen to what it has to say, using only organic farming methods and studying biodynamic principles. He produces wines and olive oils with strong terroir identities and mineral depth from the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna. Sicily is traditionally planted with high density vines, but he chose to spread out the old vines and plant other crops like fruit and wheat. The new grapes he has planted are on their own vines. The grapes are purposely low yielding and hand selected so that only the best ones make it into the finished wine. They add nothing to their wines and use only neutral containers to ensure the terroir and grape characters are fully expressed; the results are astounding. This pure nerello mascalese comes from vines averaging over 60 years old, leading to depth and concentration of ripe fruit with the perfect balance of tannin. It has lush red and dark fruit aromas with graphite, herbs, a touch of earth and some umami leading to a dry, mineral finish. Biodynamically grown, low-intervention, vegan.
