Cobb Wines was founded in 2001, when two generations of the Cobb family came together, sharing a passion for pinot noir, wanting to produce an excellent, single-vineyard example from the Sonoma Coast. David Cobb has winegrowing expertise, being one of the original pioneers in the Sonoma Coast, and is joined by his also-talented son, a noted pinot noir specialist, Ross. David was originally a marine ecologist, so he was able to study the soils and climate thoroughly to select land that he believed to be ideal for pinot noir. Ross obtained a degree in archaeology and sustainable agriculture, and fell in love with the vineyard work beside his dad. After spending a decade honing his winemaking skills, he convinced his parents to start Cobb. The grapes are farmed sustainably, and in the winery, Ross focuses on an elegant and complex style that reflects the different terroirs of each of their four vineyards with only moderate use of French oak. The Jack Hill Vineyard, planted in 1998, sits near the town of Occidental, overlooking the Freestone Valley. It is their steepest site, and one of the coldest as well, creating their most giving and graceful pinots. Sustainably grown.
