Owners of Grand Corbin-Despagne in Saint-Emilion for over 2 centuries, seven generations of the Despagne family have shared the same love for a vineyard and respect for its traditions. François Despagne owns the estate today, embracing a deep respect for the vineyard’s natural environment. Describing himself as a modern traditionalist, this ambassador of terroir nevertheless keeps a constant eye on modern solutions to enhance and perfect his wines. It was his ancestor, Louis Despagne (whose family were smallholders at Cheval Blanc), who purchased the first family parcels in 1812 at a place named Grand Corbin, just a few acres away from that prestigious Saint-Emilion First Growth. The vineyards are certified organic and comprised of blue clay, brown clay, and sand. They are in northern Saint-Emilion, but this vintage shows a more Pomerol style, with notes of truffle and violets. This is a Bordeaux for Napa drinkers looking for some restraint – 2015 was a warm vintage, so the fruit is more evident and plush with elegant but firm tannin. They also increased their proportion of new barrels used for aging, bringing it up to 45% new, 50% 1-year-old, and 5% 2-year-old, giving a touch more of that vanilla and baking spice profile. Certified organic.
