Long overshadowed by Priorat, its close neighbor to the east, the region of Montsant has its own unique character, highlighted by bright red clay, chalk, and granite soils. Celler Comunica is a small winery in Montsant started by Patri Morillo and Pep Aguilar in 2010. They first bonded as students on the commuter train between Barcelona and Catalonia, and ended up as roommates. After they finished their studies, Patri and Pep formed their own oenology consultancy which evolved into the creation of their own label. Comunica (meaning "the (phone) line is busy") comes from the Fontanals-Baboixos estate vineyards, a showcase of decomposed granitic soils, moderate climate, and old vines. Made from 65% carignan and 35% garnacha that range in age from 45-60 years old, the wine spends 22 months in stainless steel on fine lees. Refreshing with bright acidity, this is packed with flavor, with an enticing balance between red and dark berries and spicy accents of smoke and herbs, with a mineral-laden, saline, savory finish. Organically grown, low-intervention, vegan.
