A family winery for over three generations, Paltrinieri is located near Modena, just off the A1 autostrada. ‘Il Cristo’ is the Paltrinieri’s main vineyard, named for a neighboring trattoria and historical way station nestled between the rivers Secchia and Panaro. Both the trattoria and the locale predate the town and appellation of Sorbara. Winemaker Alberto and his wife Barbera have produced a frizzante that will have you rethinking every assumption you had about Lambrusco. ‘Radice’ is a nod to Lambrusco’s roots (“radici” translates as “roots”), made from the Lambrusco Sorbara grape, which is destemmed, gently pressed, and fermented with native yeasts. It spends 60-75 days on the lees, and refermentation occurs in bottle for a duration of 90 days. An eye opener from the start, this wine provides zesty acidity, notes of grapefruit peel, and hints of red fruit on a lively, fizzy frame. Far from a fruity, soft sipper, this possesses a bracing, savory character that provides a brilliant counterpoint to a hearty bowl of pasta al ragù or plate of salumi.
