Founded in 1907, Cantina di Casteggio is one of many co-ops in the Oltrepò Pavese DOC in Lombardy, but fortunately one that has taken a turn to quality rather than quantity. The region is a tiny blip on a wide plain 60km south of Milan, and Cantina di Casteggio is one of the larger operations in town with at least 350 members and a massive facility that is a combination of old-school and new-school techniques. They have brought in a famous Italian consultant, Riccardo Cotarella, and selected their top 50 growers for this “quality project” to create better wines for export. Full of juicy red fruit, barbera produces wines in a wide range of styles, from youthful, fresh and fruity, to serious, structured and age-worthy. This one is on the lighter side, as it sees no oak to allow the fruit and earth to express itself. It offers up friendly flavors of smooth red berries with a light body, refreshing acidity, and silky tannins.
