From the slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily comes this delectable red that is the epitome of old school Italian winemaking. Calabretta is a traditional winery that's putting a spin on classic Sicilian varietals, blending extra wine left over from their acclaimed long-aging single vintages into a more youthful wine. The altitude and wind on the slopes of Mt. Etna contribute to reducing disease and pest pressure, allowing winemaker Massimiliano Calabretta to use minimal intervention in the vineyards. The current bottling of ‘Cala Cala’ is a blend of 2005, 2008, 2013, 2014, and 2016 vintages, made up of 95% nerello mascalese and 5% nerello cappuccio. Grapes are sourced from various estate-owned high elevation parcels around Etna, hand harvested, and aged partially in large botti and partially in stainless steel. Medium-bodied, this is a “rustic hug” in a bottle: definitely earthy and funky, but not overbearing, with plush red fruit mingling with spicy medicinal crushed herbs and firm tannins on the finish. Organically grown, low-intervention, vegan.
