Birichino Winery was founded in 2008 by Alex Krause and John Locke, sourcing grapes from sustainably farmed family vineyards, focusing on older plantings, often from non-grafted vines that are more expressive of the natural character of the grapes. The pair have been making wine for several decades not just in California but also other countries including Italy and France. This California vin gris pays tribute to the traditions of Provence, blending 77% Alpine grenache from the Sierra Nevadas, 9% 128 year-old vine cinsault, 7% mourvèdre, and 5% rolle (vermentino) that is whole-cluster pressed and fermented with native yeast to produce a crisp, focused rosé that’s a versatile match for food. Light salmon in color, with fragrant aromas of fresh flowers, berries, and Asian fruits, this wine is structured and dynamic on the palate. It is bone dry with notes of crushed herbs, wild strawberries, and citrus zest, and is delicious proof that a gulpable rosé doesn’t always have to be light and ethereal!
