Belem’s was founded in 1932 by the last surviving member of the Henriques family, and pays homage to the family’s ancestral home in Belém, Câmara de Lobos, a historic fishing village west of Funchal whose history is linked to the history of Madeira (the island and the wine) itself. The company is still owned by the same family to this day, and they are one of the most esteemed and storied producers on the island. This Madeira is made from tinta negra mole grapes and spends a minimum of three years in neutral oak. It is medium-dry, notable for its vinous character and concentration. Delicious as an aperitif or in cocktails but also an exceptionally great cooking Madeira.
