Agostina Pieri was founded by Francesco Monaci, and very quickly, his wines would inspire a frenzy and become some of the most sought-after wines in Montalcino. It took him a long time to settle on the perfect vineyard to make the wine of his dreams, but in 1991 he finally landed on a 7-ha holding in Castelnuovo dell’Abate that is perfectly situated with a full southern exposure, allowing for incredible ripeness even in the old, low-vigor sangiovese clones that he uses. He treats his Rosso di Montalcino as he would a Brunello, and he is the only producer to ever earn Gambero Rosso’s prestigious Tre Bicchieri score for a “mere” Rosso di Montalcino, outpacing most Brunellos and setting a new benchmark for the appellation in 1995. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel followed by 12 months of ageing in older French barriques. The resulting wine is big and rich with tons of ripe red fruit, balanced acidity and tannin structure, and a long, luxurious finish. Sustainably grown.
